Straworks specializes in the niche trade of bale carpentry. It's the stuff conventional carpenters scratch
their head at. They ask us: "How thick do you make the plaster stops and where do you put them?" It's the carpentry
specific to 18" wide walls of straw: the curb rails, bale caps, plaster stops, window and door bucks. Its the lovely,
thick and wide wooden window sills that turn a window well into a place to sit, read, look out the window or talk.
We do a lot of bale carpentry and consult others on how to do it. We also regularly install siding, tongue 'n groove
ceiling, soffit & fascia and on occasion build doors and shutters too. Working in wood is a joy and second only to our
favorite form of cellulose--straw! Indeed if bale building hadn't been invented we'd be energy efficient carpenters.
Straworks also specializes in designing structural wall framing systems that maximize ease of bale installation, thermal
performance and use no more wood than a conventional wall of 2x6's on 16 inches on centre. For more information see the Design
page.
