House, Eldorado, ON. Deirdre
spent 4 months working on this house as an intern with Chris Magwood, a renowned bale builder, author and educator. That summer
he was building his mother this kidney shaped home.
Features: rubble-trench foundation, exoskeleton post-and-beam
frame using local wood, local hemp bales from Moorcroft Hemp Farms,earthen plaster using local clay, coloured clay plaster
and paint by Jen Feigin, in-floor radiant heating in rammed earth, natural linoleum kitchen floor.

Sustainable Washroom Block
The Frink Centre
Plainfield, ON. Still working as an intern with Chris Magwood, Deirdre project managed the construction of
this washroom block and worked as a contractor doing foundation form work, framing and bale work in the fall of 2004. She
returned in April to plaster (2005 Project page) and again in 2007 to install a rainscreen on the east side of the builidng
(2007 Project page). Features: load-bearing straw bale
walls, clay plaster, composting toilets, constructed wet land, grid-intertied renewable energy system, solar hot water.

an intern with Chris Magwood, Deirdre worked on this project for 2 weeks doing general carpentry, truss installation and
strapping the roof.
Features: modified post-and-beam construction, organic
straw from Wiseacres in Centreville, ON., lime plaster, in-floor radiant heat, off-grid renewable energy system.
